The vasectomy procedure

A vasectomy will only take about an hour out of your day - the procedure itself is around 30 minutes with 30 minutes to recover and to ensure you understand post op care.

The procedure is done with a local anaesthetic, so you will be awake during the procedure. Around 50% of men find that they don't even need paracetamol following the procedure.

A small amount of anaesthetic is injected mainly into the scrotal skin, but also around the chord. We do not inject the testicles. Most patients report that this feels more odd than painful. The anaesthetic takes about one minute to work and we ensure you are numb before the procedure begins.

During the procedure itself, we remove a small portion of the vas (vas-ectomy). This is the tube that transports the sperm from the testicle to the ejaculatory duct. We use a tried and tested surgical technique to tie the tube on both sides, so that sperm is prevented from travelling into the semen.

Before you become sterile, the sperm that remains in the vas needs to be ejaculated. Therefore, you must continue using an alternative method of contraception until your semen analysis confirms you are sterile.

We conduct the procedure on Tuesdays or Fridays at St Isan Road Surgery in Cardiff.
